The Old Geezer
Please Excuse My Absence

I have not blogged since July of 2015 due to the fact that my Lovely Wife was diagnosed with 2 types of cancer. A new case of breast cancer which has metastasized and gone to her bones, mainly her back. She had a mastectomy of her left breast which showed the type of cancer that was in her bones. She has been taking an oral med. every day and she has a port under her skin to receive a liquid med. She has gone through one round of radiation treatments to stop some pain in her back. That gave her GERD and the med for that was nasty tasting. The bone cancer has caused the vertebra in her lower back to pinch her left sciatic nerve causing her pain, numbness and foot drag. She also has skin cancer that has only been partly addressed.

I have been busy taking care of her as the treatments have left her weak and sickly. She can not drive so I have to drive her to her appointments and treatments. I also have to do all the cooking and most of what cleaning we do. So I do not have a lot of time for blogging. However the installment of the review of the Schaeffer Ultrafine 0.3mm pencil marks what I hope will be a new review every month. However some of my future reviews may seem familiar as they may be a review of a pencil or pen that I have reviewed before just in another size due to my limited collection of writing instruments and the economic state of our nation.

I am grateful to George Fox for wanting me to do a review of another one of his pencils. I think that as a reader of my humble blog, may fine of interest as the Schaeffer Ultra Fine is a very unusual pencil.

So please excuse my absence and as a reader of my humble blog I hope that you enjoy the review of this unique pencil.

Coming Soon...

Thank you,

The Old Geezer.

Am I Drooling?

While surfing the web I came across the Viking Direct website.  I looked around a bit then, I found "it".  The all stainless version of the Porsche Design Tec Flex P'3110 Fountain Pen!  I'd seen this fountain pen some years back and was struck by it's overall beauty and design. I was also struck by it's price tag!  While I'd love to be able to afford such a magnificent pen, like most very high quality fountain pens, the price is a bit out of my reach - like from here to the moon out of reach!  But that does not stop me from wanting one!

It features a rhodium coated 18K gold nib, silver plated and palladium* coated finishes, and a barrel made from the weaved stainless steel material used to make metal flex hoses for a cars electrical system!  It also accepts international sized ink cartridges or bottled ink with the use of the converted provided with the pen.  It also carries the Porsche Design name!  While it may not approach 200 mph it sure looks like it could!  It's just one of those iconic items that I just know instinctively that I'd really, really like to have.  Or at the very least have the chance to write with one for a day!

So, if any of you rich blog readers out there just happen to want to lavish a perfect stranger (OK, so I not perfect) with an expensive gift, send me an email and I'll send you my shipping addy!  In the meantime go check out the Porsche Design Tec Flex P'3110 Fountain Pen at Viking Direct!

Hey, Geezer!

I actually own one of these. Mine is P3110 ball point pen, and in real life it looks actually much more cool than on the picture. After a while I can say that my opinion about it is somewhat twofold...

First, Porshe Design P3110 is a very cool, geekish pen. A very good writing instrument, accepts standard ball point pen refills (Parker/Faber Castel). The pen is exceptionally durable, made from steel and feels quite heavy in hands. The most impressive thing is when you retract the point – the stainless weaved stainless steel actually contracts and expands!

On the other hand, the pen is more ``for the show'' than for actual writing. It works great, no complaints, but it is difficult to write with it long enough – that waved stainless grip feels like a fence. I mean, the pen is not comfortable for long writing sessions, and that's why I use it in my organizer.

And the most disappointing – Porshe design has nothing to do with Porshe. It is merely a part of Pelikan – yes, Pelikan actually bought them. But that does not diminish the merits of the pen!

So, the bottom line: very cool and exceptionally durable writing instrument, but not for long writing sessions (my lovely Lamy Swift comes to the resque! ). And it is pricy, as you rightfully noted.

P.S> Thank you for the blog, it is very helpfull. Ordered Staedtler REG 925 85 03 as a replacement for my old rotring pencil.
